India Alerts Pakistan of Possible Flood Under Indus Waters Treaty

In the first major communication between the two countries since the May military standoff, India formally alerted Pakistan about a possible major flood in the Tawi River in Jammu under the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). The warning was delivered through the Indian High Commission in Islamabad early on the morning of August 24.

Pakistani authorities—including the NDMA, provincial irrigation departments, and military engineering units—issued warnings to ensure preparedness across relevant sectors

This outreach occurred despite India having placed the IWT in "abeyance" back in April following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives. That decision had frozen communication protocols under the treaty

Why This Matters

  • Break in Diplomatic Silence: Marks the first instance of cooperation since the May escalation, signaling a possible thaw in channels of communication.

  • Humanitarian Gesture: Shows that despite political differences, treaty mechanisms can still serve a protective role during emergencies.

  • Strategic Implications: While symbolic, this action may signal India's willingness to uphold treaty norms under specific circumstances, even as broader diplomatic tensions persist.
