WASHINGTON/MOSCOW: United States and Russia are reported to have discussed major energy agreements as part of efforts to reach a ceasefire in war-torn Ukraine.
According to diplomatic sources, the talks included the possibility of Exxon Mobil rejoining the Sakhalin-1 project in Russia, while Moscow may buy U.S. equipment for its Arctic LNG-2 facility. Another proposal under consideration involves Washington purchasing nuclear-powered icebreakers from Russia.
The discussions took place during U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff’s visit to Moscow, where he also met Russian President Vladimir Putin. Reports suggest these talks were held with the backing of President Donald Trump’s administration.
While energy diplomacy is being explored as a peace incentive, Trump has also warned that tougher economic sanctions on Russia remain an option if negotiations fail to produce results.
