A magnitude 6.0 earthquake shook Papua New Guinea’s New Ireland region on Tuesday. The tremor, with a depth of about 10 km, struck at 16:59 GMT according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

The epicenter was located at 5.49° S latitude and 153.79° E longitude.

There are no immediate reports of casualties or damage to infrastructure from the quake.

Papua New Guinea lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, making it prone to frequent seismic activity. Residents in the New Ireland region felt shaking, but initial assessments suggest that the impact was limited. Authorities are monitoring the situation for aftershocks.
