China has expressed strong opposition to the United States' recent expansion of export restrictions, accusing Washington of "unreasonable suppression" and demanding an immediate correction of what it deems an unjustified move.
The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on Friday that it had broadened its export control list to include subsidiaries of Chinese companies already on the "Entity List." Under the new rule, any subsidiary that is 50% or more owned by a listed entity will now automatically be subject to the same restrictions. This move aims to prevent Chinese firms from circumventing existing sanctions by restructuring operations.
In response, China's Ministry of Commerce issued a statement condemning the U.S. action as "abusive and politically motivated." The ministry vowed to take necessary measures to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese enterprises. "China urges the U.S. to immediately correct its wrongful practice and stop the unreasonable suppression of Chinese companies," the statement read.
The expanded export controls are expected to impact major Chinese tech firms, including Huawei and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC), which have previously faced restrictions. The new policy could affect thousands of Chinese subsidiaries and complicate compliance for U.S. companies involved in global supply chains.
China has previously criticized similar U.S. actions, labeling them as economic coercion and an abuse of export control tools under the pretext of national security concerns. The latest move is likely to further strain trade relations between the two economic powers.
