Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has extended an official apology to Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani for an Israeli strike in Doha, diplomatic sources confirmed on Monday.
The apology was conveyed during Netanyahu’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House. Officials said the move came after Qatar demanded an apology as a condition to continue its mediation role in the ongoing Gaza conflict.
Earlier this month, Israeli forces carried out a strike in Doha, targeting what it claimed were Hamas operatives. The attack, however, drew strong condemnation from Qatar, which termed it a violation of its sovereignty. A Qatari security official was also reported killed in the incident.
Following the apology, observers believe that Qatar is likely to resume its role in facilitating negotiations between Israel and Palestinian representatives. Diplomats noted that the development could reduce tensions and provide a window of opportunity for advancing ceasefire talks.
Netanyahu’s apology marks a rare gesture in Israel’s foreign policy and underscores Qatar’s importance in regional diplomacy, particularly in ongoing efforts to de-escalate the situation in Gaza.
