Match referee Andy Pycroft has formally apologized to the Pakistan cricket team following the recent handshake controversy during the Asia Cup 2025 clash between India and Pakistan.
The incident arose after the pre-match handshake was officially called off due to updated protocols, but the Pakistan team was not informed that the post-match handshake would also not take place. This communication gap led to visible confusion on the field and criticism from Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials, who described the incident as being “against the spirit of the game.”
According to reports, Pycroft admitted his error in failing to properly communicate the decision regarding handshakes at the conclusion of the match. He acknowledged the oversight as a “blunder” and issued a direct apology to Pakistan’s management and players.
Sources close to the matter suggest that the International Cricket Council (ICC) has also taken note of the controversy and will review its communication processes to ensure such misunderstandings do not occur again in future fixtures.
The apology has been received by the Pakistan team, but officials have stressed that transparency and consistency in applying match protocols are critical to maintaining the integrity and spirit of cricket.
