President Trump: It will be 'very bad' for Afghanistan if Bagram Air Base is not returned

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning, saying it would be “very bad” for Afghanistan if Bagram Air Base is not returned to Afghan control.

Speaking at a recent event, Trump criticized the U.S. withdrawal strategy and reiterated that the loss of Bagram was a strategic mistake. He argued that the air base, located near Kabul, was vital not only for Afghan security but also for regional stability.

“Bagram should never have been given up. It was one of the most powerful bases in the world,” Trump said, adding that without its return, Afghanistan could face heightened instability and greater influence from rival powers.

The former president also suggested that the absence of U.S. and Afghan control over Bagram has created a vacuum that could be exploited by terrorist groups and foreign actors.

Afghan analysts agree that the air base remains a symbol of military and strategic dominance, and its fate could shape Afghanistan’s future security dynamics. However, critics of Trump’s statement argue that the situation on the ground is far more complex and that regaining control of Bagram would require significant international negotiations.

The comments come amid broader discussions in Washington over U.S. foreign policy in South Asia and Afghanistan’s uncertain future following years of conflict.
