China has cemented its position as the global leader in 5G connectivity, with the number of mobile users on fifth-generation networks reaching 1.15 billion, according to official data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT).

The milestone highlights the rapid adoption of next-generation technology across the world’s largest mobile market. Over the past year, China’s telecom giants — China Mobile, China Unicom, and China Telecom — have accelerated the rollout of 5G infrastructure, extending coverage to urban centers, industrial hubs, and rural areas.

Officials noted that 5G has become a key driver of digital transformation, boosting sectors such as smart manufacturing, autonomous vehicles, telemedicine, and artificial intelligence. The expansion also underlines Beijing’s commitment to maintaining technological leadership amid global competition.

Industry analysts believe that with over 70% of the population now using 5G services, China is setting the pace for future innovations, including 6G research and advanced industrial applications.
