The Federal Government of Pakistan has formally approved the Wheat Policy 2025-26, aiming to secure fair prices for farmers, maintain strategic wheat reserves, and ensure food security across the country.
Under the new policy, federal and provincial governments will acquire nearly 6.2 million tons of strategic wheat reserves, with purchases set at PKR 3,500 per maund, aligned with international wheat import prices. The policy ensures that interprovincial movement of wheat will remain unrestricted, promoting market competitiveness while safeguarding farmers’ profits.
A national committee, chaired by the Federal Minister for Wheat, will oversee the policy’s implementation and coordination. The committee will include representatives from all provinces, meet weekly, and report directly to the Prime Minister. The focus will be on monitoring policy execution and ensuring farmers receive equitable pricing.
Prime Minister emphasized the critical importance of wheat to Pakistan’s agricultural economy and food security, calling it a staple food and a primary source of income for farmers. He affirmed that the government is aware of the challenges faced by farmers and is committed to their welfare, acknowledging their vital role as the backbone of the economy.
The policy was formulated after extensive consultations with provincial governments, stakeholders, farmer organizations, and industry representatives, ensuring a consensus-driven approach. Its key goals are to protect public interests, enhance farmers’ income, promote agricultural development, and strengthen national food security.
