Sébastien Lecornu has stepped down as Prime Minister of France, just 26 days after his appointment by President Emmanuel Macron. Lecornu’s resignation was submitted and accepted on October 6, 2025, hours after unveiling his new cabinet—his attempt to form a stable government was met with fierce criticism from both coalition partners and opposition parties.
His cabinet was seen as too similar to that of his predecessor François Bayrou, with many ministers retained, leading critics to say there was little real change. The appointment of Bruno Le Maire as Defence Minister, in particular, drew sharp backlash from conservatives.
Lecornu cited the inability of political factions to compromise, saying parties acted as if each held a majority and refused to adapt their positions. His resignation deepens France’s ongoing political crisis: since snap legislative elections in 2024 produced a fragmented assembly, governing coalitions have struggled to hold together.
