In a span of just three days, Karachi traffic authorities issued over 11,000 electronic challans, with 1,755 fines specifically for overspeeding, highlighting the city’s strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
Many citizens expressed surprise and frustration over the e-challans, claiming that while the government installed cameras and monitoring devices, no banners or signboards were placed to inform drivers about speed limits or other violations under surveillance. Some residents argued that indiscriminate issuance of challans could result in all fines being spent on paying the penalties themselves.
According to DSP Traffic Kashif Nadeem, the e-challan system is active in key areas including Hasan Square, Sohrab Centre, Sharae Faisal, Nursery, Baloch Colony, Drigh Road, II Chund Regar Road, Clifton, Teen Talwar, and Defence Unity Street, primarily monitoring overspeeding violations.
Interestingly, the previous day even a government vehicle under DIG Traffic Peer Muhammad Shah received an e-challan near Garden for not wearing a seatbelt, carrying a fine of PKR 10,000.
The authorities emphasize that the automated e-challan system is designed to improve road safety and reduce traffic accidents in Karachi.
