The second round of talks between Pakistan and Afghanistan concluded in Istanbul, Türkiye, as both sides continued diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions and strengthen border security cooperation. The meeting took place at a local hotel, hosted by senior Turkish officials, according to diplomatic sources.
Discussions primarily focused on reviewing the implementation of agreements reached during the first round of talks held in Doha, where Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban government had agreed to steps aimed at de-escalation and preventing cross-border hostilities.
Sources revealed that Pakistan presented a comprehensive counterterrorism plan to the Afghan delegation, urging Kabul to take concrete action against militant groups operating from its soil. Pakistan’s delegation comprised two senior officials, while the Afghan team was led by Deputy Interior Minister Rahmatullah Mujib.
The Istanbul meeting is part of an ongoing mediation effort jointly facilitated by Qatar and Türkiye, following heightened border tensions earlier this month. The first round in Doha resulted in a temporary ceasefire agreement between both countries.
Despite diplomatic engagement, cross-border routes remain closed for the 14th consecutive day, including Chaman, Torkham, Ghulam Khan, Angoor Adda, and Kharlachi crossings, leaving hundreds of cargo trucks stranded on both sides. The closures have disrupted trade, causing spoilage of perishable goods and heavy financial losses.
