Two years of Israeli attacks on Gaza complete

It has now been two years since the conflict between Israel and Hamas escalated following the October 7, 2023 attacks, and Gaza has borne some of the heaviest costs. According to Gaza’s health authorities, more than 67,000 Palestinians have been killed, with a significant portion being women and children. Thousands more have been wounded or displaced, infrastructure is reduced to ruins, and humanitarian conditions have deteriorated sharply.

The conflict began when militants launched a mass attack in southern Israel, killing around 1,200 and abducting over 250 hostages. Israel’s military responded with a massive aerial campaign and subsequent ground operations into Gaza, aiming to dismantle Hamas’s operational capacity.

Gaza now faces near total devastation in many areas. Reports say more than 78 % of buildings have either been damaged or destroyed, and nearly all infrastructure—hospitals, roads, schools—have suffered extensive harm. Civilians have been forced to flee en masse, many living in makeshift shelters or displaced within the enclave. International condemnation has grown, and the Vatican has referred to the campaign as an “ongoing massacre,” urging proportionality and protection of civilians.

Amid this destruction, ceasefire talks and diplomatic efforts continue, but persistent tensions and distrust hamper progress. Meanwhile, personal tragedies underscore the human toll: families of hostages, survivors, and displaced communities confront psychological trauma and daily uncertainty.

As the two-year milestone passes, Gaza’s fate hangs in the balance: reconstruction needs are vast, peace prospects remain fragile, and the international community watches closely.
