Trump Claims to Halt Thailand–Cambodia Clashes

U.S. President Donald Trump has said that he successfully intervened to stop fighting between Thailand and Cambodia, asserting that both nations agreed to halt all clashes starting Friday.

According to Trump, after speaking with the leaders of both countries, “Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to stop all hostilities, and both are ready for peace while continuing trade with the United States.”

However, Thailand has challenged Trump’s claim.

Following a phone call with the U.S. President, Thailand’s Prime Minister said during a press conference that Trump had expressed concern over renewed border clashes and wanted an immediate return to the ceasefire.

The Thai PM clarified that he told Trump Thailand would protect its sovereignty and urged the U.S. leader to pressure Cambodia to end hostilities. He also stressed that there is no ceasefire agreement yet between the two neighbors.

Last month, Thailand suspended the U.S.-brokered peace agreement with Cambodia after two of its soldiers were injured in a landmine explosion near the border.

The agreement was originally meant to ensure lasting peace after deadly border clashes in July, which killed more than 40 people and displaced over 300,000 civilians.

Both countries had signed the deal in October during a ceremony attended by President Trump in Malaysia, but Thailand later refused to recognize it as a formal peace agreement.
