An Islamabad District and Sessions Court has sentenced advocate Imaan Mazari and her husband, Hadi Ali, to a combined 17 years of imprisonment each in a controversial tweets case.

Additional Sessions Judge Afzal Majoka announced the short verdict and also issued a detailed 22-page written judgment outlining the court’s findings and reasoning.

According to the court verdict, both convicts were sentenced under multiple provisions of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA). Under Section 9 of the PECA Act, Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali were each awarded five years in prison along with a fine of Rs50 million.

Similarly, under Section 10, the court sentenced both to 10 years of imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs300 million on each. Additionally, under Section 26-A, both were awarded two years in prison along with a fine of Rs10 million each.

The court clarified that cumulatively, both convicts have been sentenced to 17 years of imprisonment and fined Rs360 million each. However, the court acquitted both Imaan Mazari and Hadi Ali under Section 11 of the PECA Act.

Following the announcement of the verdict, the court ordered that both convicts be sent to jail on a 14-day judicial remand.

Earlier during the proceedings, Imaan Mazari had stated that she was boycotting the court proceedings, after which both accused formally boycotted the trial. The court later reserved its verdict after completion of arguments and examination of evidence, which was subsequently announced.
