Pakistan T20 cricket team captain Salman Ali Agha has defended senior batter Babar Azam, stating that while his performance in the Big Bash League (BBL) was not impressive, he has delivered strong performances for Pakistan and remains an important player for the national side.
Speaking during a press conference in Lahore, Salman Agha said that playing matches in Sri Lanka during the T20 World Cup would be beneficial for Pakistan. He noted that the team would not face travel fatigue, unlike other competing sides, giving Pakistan a potential advantage in the tournament.
The captain acknowledged that the T20 World Cup would be highly challenging and emphasized the need for disciplined and smart cricket. He added that conditions in Sri Lanka would likely favor bowlers, making high-scoring matches less common.
Director of the High Performance Centre Aaqib Javed also spoke about Babar Azam’s selection, saying that both the captain and coaching staff believe Babar can play a key role in the team. He clarified that selections are made strictly based on team requirements and not on favoritism.
Aaqib Javed stressed that selecting one player does not automatically guarantee selection for another, adding that Babar Azam was chosen because his experience and skill align with the team’s needs for the World Cup.
Earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officially announced the 15-member squad for the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. Salman Ali Agha has been appointed captain, while Babar Azam has made his return to the national T20 setup.
