Lahore has come alive once again as the iconic Basant kite festival officially returns after an 18-year ban, marking a historic revival of one of Punjab’s most cherished cultural traditions. The festival is being held from February 6 to 8, 2026, following special approval by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif.
The revival has been made possible under the newly enforced Punjab Kite Flying Ordinance 2025, which introduces strict safety regulations aimed at preventing past tragedies linked to hazardous kite strings. Under the ordinance, only cotton strings are permitted, while the use of chemical-coated or metallic strings remains strictly prohibited.
Authorities have also declared multiple no-fly zones, particularly in areas surrounding Lahore’s airport, to ensure aviation safety. In addition, motorcyclists are required to install protective safety rods on their handlebars to safeguard their necks from flying strings.
To facilitate compliance, the Punjab government has launched free safety rod installation camps across the city. Traffic police checkpoints have reported high levels of cooperation, with most riders already equipped with the required safety measures. Officials say enforcement teams will remain active throughout the festival to ensure strict adherence to the new rules.
The economic impact of Basant’s return has been immediate and significant. Kite markets across Lahore are witnessing unprecedented activity, with sales already surpassing Rs 1 billion. Hotels in the city are fully booked as visitors from across the country arrive to witness the celebrations.
According to estimates, the three-day festival is expected to generate between Rs 4 billion and Rs 6 billion in overall economic activity, benefiting local traders, artisans, transport services, and the hospitality sector.
Residents have welcomed the festival’s return with enthusiasm, describing it as a symbol of Lahore’s cultural identity and festive spirit. Authorities maintain that the balance between celebration and safety will remain their top priority, ensuring that Basant’s revival is both joyful and secure.
