Karachi: Doctors at Abbasi Shaheed Hospital staged a protest on Friday, demanding the release of their pending salaries. The medical staff, including house officers and paramedics, expressed their grievances over delayed payments, which they claimed had not been disbursed for several months. The protest disrupted hospital operations, with some departments temporarily ceasing services.
In response to the protest, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab addressed the media, condemning the strike and labeling it as an attempt to "blackmail" the government for salary hikes. He emphasized that such actions were unacceptable and warned the protesting staff to return to work immediately or face disciplinary actions, including potential termination. "If you want to work, then work. But don’t blackmail us into raising your salaries," the mayor stated during a ceremony where he distributed electric motorbikes to KMC employees.
Mayor Wahab further criticized the protesting doctors, asserting that public servants must adhere to government regulations and that protests would not be rewarded. He also acknowledged the challenges faced by Abbasi Shaheed Hospital but reiterated the city's commitment to rehabilitating the facility.
The situation has raised concerns about the working conditions and morale of healthcare professionals in Karachi's public hospitals. The ongoing dispute underscores the broader issues of healthcare funding and administrative challenges within the city's medical institutions.
