At least 12 Pakistani soldiers were martyred after militants of the outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) ambushed a military convoy in South Waziristan on Saturday, security officials confirmed.
According to initial reports, the heavily armed militants opened fire on the convoy as it was moving through a mountainous stretch of the region. The intense assault triggered a fierce exchange of fire, during which the soldiers fought back bravely but suffered heavy casualties.
The Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) stated that reinforcements were immediately dispatched, and a clearance operation was launched to track down and eliminate the attackers. The area has been cordoned off and aerial surveillance is underway to block possible escape routes of the militants.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir strongly condemned the attack, vowing that the blood of the martyrs would not go in vain. They reiterated the nation’s resolve to eradicate terrorism from its soil.
This is one of the deadliest attacks in recent months in the tribal districts, highlighting the continued threat posed by the TTP despite intensified counter-terrorism operations. Analysts say the ambush underscores the militants’ ability to strike military targets in remote terrain, posing challenges for Pakistan’s security forces.
Funeral prayers for the martyred soldiers will be held at their native towns, while the armed forces have pledged to honor their sacrifices by continuing the fight against terrorism with renewed determination.
