Torrential rains lashed Karachi from late last night till Tuesday morning, leaving large parts of the metropolis submerged in rainwater and causing severe traffic disruptions across major arteries. The downpour, which continued for several hours, created difficulties for commuters and residents, exposing the city’s fragile drainage and infrastructure system.

According to the Meteorological Department, nearly five inches of rainfall was recorded in different areas of the city within a few hours. The most affected localities included Saddar, Clifton, PECHS, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, and North Karachi, where waist-deep water was reported. Several low-lying neighborhoods were also inundated, forcing residents to stay indoors.

Traffic flow on Shahrah-e-Faisal, II Chundrigar Road, and Korangi Industrial Area came to a standstill as rainwater accumulated on the roads. Motorists remained stranded for hours, while public transport services were also disrupted.

Administrator Karachi and Mayor Murtaza Wahab visited various rain-affected areas early in the morning, monitoring drainage operations and directing relevant departments to expedite pumping of accumulated water. He admitted that the situation was challenging but assured that the administration was making efforts to restore normalcy.

Meanwhile, power outages were reported in several parts of the city after feeders tripped due to heavy showers. Citizens expressed frustration over prolonged electricity breakdowns, demanding urgent action from the power supply companies.

Rescue services confirmed that more than 50 incidents of vehicles breaking down and minor accidents were reported across the city, though no major casualties had been recorded until the filing of this report.

Authorities have advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and stay indoors as further rainfall is expected over the next 24 hours.
