In a significant cultural backlash, hundreds of actors, directors, and film professionals have signed a pledge to boycott Israeli film institutions they believe are complicit in genocide and apartheid against Palestinians. The initiative, launched by Film Workers for Palestine, is modeled after the cultural boycott of apartheid-era South Africa.

Signatories and Goals

Prominent industry names—including Yorgos Lanthimos, Ava DuVernay, Olivia Colman, Mark Ruffalo, Cynthia Nixon, and Emma Stone—are among those who have signed the pledge. More than 1,200 individuals have committed not to work with Israeli film festivals, broadcasters, production companies, or cinemas that they view as supporting state actions in Gaza.

The pledge underscores the power of cinema in shaping narratives and assigns responsibility to the global film community to act in opposition to injustice. The group cites a plausible risk of genocide in Gaza, as recognized by the International Court of Justice.

Reaction from Israeli Film Sector

Israeli film bodies and artists have criticized the boycott, arguing that it unfairly targets individuals who promote dialogue and peace through their work. The campaign, they say, risks undermining cultural bridges rather than fostering understanding.
