Tens of thousands of workers across Italy joined a nationwide strike and protest on Monday, demanding the government cease all military and arms exports to Israel amidst growing public anger over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The protests involved dockworkers blocking ports, disruptions in transport, and school closures in numerous cities including Genoa, Milan, Rome, Livorno and Bologna.

The General Confederation of Labour (CGIL) and several grass-roots unions initiated the strike, calling for the suspension of military cooperation with Israel, recognition of Palestine, and stronger humanitarian efforts.

Key actions on strike day included dockworkers at the port of Genoa refusing to load or allow trucks carrying arms destined for Israel, as well as local authorities in Ravenna denying entry to lorries suspected of carrying explosives.

Disruption was widespread: public transport and regional trains experienced delays or were shut down in some places, schools were closed, and many non-essential services were suspended in solidarity with the cause.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government, traditionally more aligned with Israel among European nations, is facing increasing internal dissent as citizens and labour organizations press for stronger actions in response to the conflict.
