French President Emmanuel Macron faced a surprising traffic halt in Manhattan when his motorcade was stopped by New York City police to make way for a motorcade believed to be for U.S. President Donald Trump. The incident, which took place today during the United Nations General Assembly, drew attention for its diplomatic awkwardness.

Macron, who was returning from delivering a speech at the UN where he announced France’s recognition of Palestinian statehood, found himself stuck behind blocked roads. After exiting his vehicle, he approached police officers to ask why roads were closed.

In a light-hearted moment captured on video, Macron pulled out his phone and called Trump, reportedly saying: “Guess what? I’m waiting in the street because everything is frozen for you.” Trump, according to French officials, was on the other end of the line.

Unable to drive further by car, Macron walked for around 30 minutes through the blocked streets toward the French Embassy, escorted by his security detail. Along the way, he paused to take photos with passersby.

Observers noted that the event, though minor, highlighted the complexities of motorcade logistics and the symbolic weight of diplomatic protocol. Many social media users praised Macron’s reaction as calm and personable.
