Actress Sydney Sweeney delivered a show-stopping performance at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) on Friday, winning immediate Oscar buzz with her role in the biopic Christy, directed by David Michôd.
In the film, the 27-year-old Emmy-nominated star embodies the pioneering female boxer Christy Salters Martin—also known as the “Coal Miner’s Daughter”—portraying her rise to prominence in West Virginia’s nascent boxing world.
The premiere at the Princess of Wales Theatre was met with a thunderous response. Standing alongside Martin herself, Sweeney called the evening a dream come true, as an actor, as a person. Martin praised Sweeney for capturing her complexity, saying, She wasn’t the beautiful, sexy Sydney. She was the tough, rugged Christy.
Sweeney’s physical transformation was equally immersive—she gained significant muscle mass, trained intensively, and even performed real boxing scenes without stunt doubles to maintain authenticity.
While an American Eagle ad campaign featuring Sweeney stirred controversy over its pun great jeans / genes he steered all attention toward her film, insisting, I m not there to talk about jeans. The movie’s about Christy.
Christy is set to release theatrically on November 7, 2025, under Black Bear Pictures, marking the company's debut in distribution. Sweeney also serves as a producer on the film.
