U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, in what officials described as a “constructive and candid” exchange amid ongoing global and regional challenges.

According to the U.S. State Department, Secretary Rubio emphasized the importance of keeping communication channels open between Washington and Beijing to responsibly manage differences and prevent misunderstandings. He reiterated that the United States is committed to maintaining direct dialogue with China on areas of concern, while also exploring opportunities for cooperation.

During the call, both sides discussed a wide range of issues, including regional security, trade relations, and global stability. Rubio underlined that the U.S. values “mature and pragmatic engagement,” while stressing the need for transparency and fairness in bilateral dealings.

China’s Foreign Ministry, in its statement, said Wang Yi urged Washington to respect China’s core interests and honor commitments made by the leadership of both nations. He noted that the recent high-level contacts between President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump had set a constructive tone for the relationship, and it was vital to carry forward that momentum.

The two diplomats also exchanged views on global challenges, including climate change, economic recovery, and regional conflicts. Both agreed to maintain regular communication in the coming weeks.

Analysts view the latest call as a sign that, despite tensions, Washington and Beijing are making efforts to prevent escalation and ensure stability in their bilateral relationship.
