The federal government has officially lifted the long-standing ban on new domestic gas connections cross Pakistan, giving relief to thousands of consumers who had been waiting for years. The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by the Minister for Energy, following recommendations from Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC).
Officials confirmed that fresh gas connections will now be provided under a new policy framework designed to ensure transparency, efficiency, and fair distribution. Priority will reportedly be given to pending applications that have been on hold since the ban was imposed.
The government has also directed both gas distribution companies to adopt digital systems for application tracking, allowing citizens to monitor the status of their requests online. According to the Energy Ministry, this move is aimed at curbing corruption, eliminating favoritism, and speeding up the process.
Speaking to the media, the Federal Minister for Energy stated that lifting the ban was a step towards addressing public grievances. “Thousands of families have suffered due to this restriction. Our new policy ensures that every applicant is treated fairly and gets their due right to access gas supply,” he said.
Industry experts believe the decision will not only provide relief to households but also help revive economic activity in small businesses dependent on domestic gas supply. However, they also warned that Pakistan’s depleting natural gas reserves could pose challenges in meeting the rising demand.
The government has assured that additional measures, including LNG imports, are being considered to balance the supply and demand of natural gas in the country.
