Senior officials from the United States and the Afghan interim government held direct talks in Kabul on Saturday, marking a significant diplomatic engagement between Washington and Kabul amid ongoing regional security concerns.

According to Afghan government sources, discussions focused on counterterrorism cooperation, humanitarian assistance, regional stability, and economic development. The U.S. delegation emphasized the need for Afghanistan to fulfill its commitments on countering extremist groups and ensuring that its soil is not used for international terrorism.

The talks also covered humanitarian challenges, including food insecurity, health care, and education. Washington reiterated its willingness to continue supporting the Afghan people through aid programs, provided that transparency and inclusivity are maintained.

On the Afghan side, interim government representatives pressed for the unfreezing of Afghan assets abroad and greater international recognition, while assuring cooperation on regional peace efforts.

Analysts see the meeting as part of Washington’s attempt to maintain limited engagement with Kabul while balancing concerns over human rights and women’s education. The dialogue comes at a time when regional stakeholders, including Pakistan, China, and Iran, are pushing for broader stability in Afghanistan.

Diplomatic observers said the Kabul talks could pave the way for future channels of communication but warned that deep differences remain over governance and rights issues.
