Popular messaging platform WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that will automatically arrange certain conversations into threads, aiming to make chats more organized and easier to follow.

According to reports from beta testers, the feature detects when a discussion branches off into multiple replies or covers a specific topic, and then automatically groups those messages under a thread. This is similar to how platforms like Slack and Telegram manage discussions, reducing clutter in busy chats.

Why It Matters

The new functionality could prove especially useful in group chats, where dozens of messages often pile up, making it difficult to track replies. With threads, users would be able to read a topic-specific chain of messages in one place, without losing the broader flow of the conversation.

Testing Phase

  • The feature has appeared in the latest WhatsApp beta for selected users on both Android and iOS.
  • It is still in the testing phase, with no confirmed rollout date for the wider public.
  • WhatsApp is also experimenting with related tools, such as improved search within threads and the ability to mute or pin specific discussion chains.

Company Focus

Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has been working on improving usability in large communities and professional use cases. Features like Communities, Channels, and enhanced group controls are part of a broader push to compete with business-oriented platforms while maintaining WhatsApp’s user-friendly appeal.

If successful, auto-threading could become one of the most significant updates for group chats since the launch of Communities, transforming how users handle busy conversations.
