Pakistan has witnessed a significant rise in mobile data usage, according to recent reports from the telecommunications and regulatory authorities. The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) revealed that combined data consumption — including both mobile and fixed broadband — soared to 27,897 petabytes in the fiscal year 2024-25, up from 20,235 petabytes in 2022-23.
Average mobile data usage per user has also increased, reaching 8.4 to 8.5 gigabytes per month. This surge is being driven by greater consumption of streaming platforms, social media, and online services, as well as more widespread use of smartphones and 4G network expansion.
The number of mobile broadband (3G/4G) users is also growing steadily. In June 2025 alone, Pakistan added 1.38 million new 3G/4G users, bringing the total to approximately 146.05 million users.Alongside this, broadband penetration rose to 60.8% in 2024-25, up from 53.6% in 2022-23.
While data usage is rising rapidly, telecom revenues have shown some decline, highlighting cost pressure on service providers despite increased demand.
Analysts suggest that to sustain this growth in data usage, investments in network infrastructure, better spectrum allocation, and affordable data packages will be critical.
