The U.S. Department of Defense recently awarded Raytheon a $41.6 million modification to an existing contract for AIM-120 AMRAAM missile production, intended to support exports to multiple allied countries. However, viral posts on X (formerly Twitter) falsely claimed this amounted to a $41.6 billion package specifically for Pakistan’s F-16 upgrades.

Official records from the Defense Security Cooperation Agency confirm that no such billion-dollar deal exists and no new notification has been issued for Pakistan. The misinformation appears to have originated from a transposition error in the reported contract figures.

Pakistan’s current AIM-120C-5 missiles are restricted to counterterrorism operations, and the exaggerated social media posts have fueled unnecessary speculation and regional tensions without any verified approvals. Experts emphasize the importance of consulting official sources before sharing sensitive defense-related news.
