Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó has announced that Hungary will soon begin discussions with U.S. companies for the purchase of nuclear fuel, marking a major step toward reducing the country’s reliance on a single energy supplier.

Speaking to the media, the foreign minister said Hungary’s goal is to diversify its energy sources and ensure secure and sustainable fuel supplies for the future. “We aim to minimize dependence on any one country by seeking alternative sources for nuclear fuel,” he stated.

Szijjártó emphasized that the procurement of nuclear fuel from the United States is a key component of Hungary’s national energy security strategy, and the government will soon hold detailed discussions with relevant U.S. officials on the project’s technical and financial aspects.

Currently, Hungary operates several Russian-fueled nuclear power plants, which are central to the nation’s electricity generation. However, in light of recent geopolitical developments, Budapest has accelerated efforts to identify alternative supply channels and strengthen long-term energy independence.

The upcoming negotiations with U.S. partners are seen as part of a broader policy to balance Hungary’s energy ties between East and West while maintaining economic stability and strategic autonomy.
