Former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan has expressed his willingness to mediate between Pakistan and Afghanistan to help restore peace in the region — but only if he is released on parole.
Speaking to the media through his sister Noreen Khan outside Adiala Jail, Imran Khan conveyed his concern over recent violent incidents involving religious groups. He urged authorities to form a judicial commission to investigate these events, including the May 9 riots and three other key incidents.
Imran Khan also called for peaceful protests in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday, emphasizing the importance of political unity in times of national crisis.
Addressing the Afghanistan issue, Khan said that the neighboring country has been suffering from war for the past 45 years. He expressed sadness over the forced repatriation of Afghan refugees, saying that sending back families who had lived in Pakistan for three generations would only “create resentment” across the border.
The PTI founder stressed that resolving tensions with Afghanistan is a political matter, not a military one, and reaffirmed his readiness to play a role in achieving regional peace if granted temporary release.
Meanwhile, Pakistan announced a 48-hour ceasefire following a request from the Afghan Taliban government, effective from 6 p.m. on Monday, as both sides aim to seek a diplomatic resolution.
