The Israeli military on Friday seized the last remaining vessel of the Global Sumud Flotilla, bringing an end to the pro-Palestinian mission that had set sail with the aim of breaking the blockade on Gaza.
According to flotilla organizers, the boat, named Marinette, was intercepted in international waters nearly 42 nautical miles from the Gaza coast. The vessel was carrying a group of international activists, including lawmakers and human rights campaigners, when Israeli naval forces surrounded and redirected it to the port city of Ashdod.
With the seizure of Marinette, Israel has now intercepted all 42 vessels that formed part of the flotilla, which included around 500 activists from more than 40 countries. Among those detained in recent days was Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, whose participation drew widespread international attention.
The Israeli government defended its actions, insisting that the flotilla posed a security threat and violated its longstanding naval blockade on Gaza. Officials confirmed that those detained were being processed and many would face deportation.
The move has sparked sharp criticism from human rights groups and several governments, who condemned the interception as a violation of international law. Demonstrations were also reported in European capitals and other cities, where protesters demanded the immediate release of the detained activists and an end to the blockade on Gaza.
The Global Sumud Flotilla, which began its journey weeks ago, was described by organizers as a humanitarian mission to deliver aid and highlight the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza. Its complete interception by Israel has fueled renewed debate over the blockade and the broader humanitarian crisis in the region.
