The Israeli military has carried out a series of airstrikes on southern Gaza, violating the recently established ceasefire agreement, officials and eyewitnesses confirmed on Sunday.

According to an Israeli army statement, the strikes were launched in response to what it claimed were ceasefire violations by Hamas earlier in the day. The military said it targeted “dozens of Hamas positions” across southern Gaza in what it described as retaliatory air operations.

The U.S.-brokered ceasefire, mediated by President Donald Trump, came into effect on October 10, bringing a temporary halt to the two-year-long conflict between Israel and Hamas that has devastated much of Gaza.

Eyewitnesses and local journalists reported that one of the strikes completely destroyed a residential building in the Al-Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza. No immediate details were available regarding the total number of casualties, but Gaza’s Civil Defense spokesperson, Mahmoud Basal, confirmed that at least 11 people have been killed so far, including six civilians who died in northern Gaza.

Observers fear that the renewed Israeli air campaign could collapse the fragile truce, potentially plunging the region back into full-scale conflict.
