US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned that Israel’s reported plan to annex parts of the occupied West Bank presents a serious risk to the Middle East peace process.

Speaking to reporters in Washington, Rubio said the United States does not believe Israel will practically move forward with the annexation but emphasized that such proposals undermine diplomatic efforts to stabilize the region.

He also accused the United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) of operating as “a subsidiary of Hamas,” calling for tighter oversight of its activities. “UNRWA’s operations must be monitored closely, as its alignment with Hamas raises legitimate concerns,” Rubio stated.

Addressing the future of governance in Gaza, Rubio made it clear that “Hamas cannot be part of any post-conflict administration,” citing the group’s violent tactics and rejection of peace frameworks.

The Secretary further explained that the proposed Gaza Task Force—intended to oversee security and reconstruction—would only include countries that Israel fully trusts.

Rubio confirmed that negotiations are ongoing with Hamas through mediators to recover the bodies of hostages, adding that the United States remains in constant coordination with its regional allies to secure humanitarian outcomes and long-term peace.
