New Study Reveals Why Depression Is More Common Among Women

A recent study published in Nature Communications has found that women are genetically more prone to depression than men. Researchers analyzed the DNA of more than 130,000 women and 64,000 men and discovered that women have nearly twice as many genetic variants linked to depression.

Experts say this means that biology, not just environment or lifestyle, plays a key role in making women more vulnerable to mental health challenges. The study noted that while men and women share some common risk genes, women also carry certain unique genetic markers that may increase their chances of developing depression.

However, the researchers warned that the difference might also appear greater because men often avoid reporting their emotional struggles or seeking mental health treatment, which can make depression in men harder to track.

The research was based on international data from Australia, the United States, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. Scientists emphasized that depression cannot be explained by genetics alone — factors like stress, diet, and life experiences also play a major role.

This study highlights the need for more gender-specific mental health care and better understanding of how biological and social factors combine to affect emotional well-being.
