In a tragic incident, Superintendent of Police (SP) Adeel Akbar, a distinguished CSS officer and MPhil graduate, died by suicide in Islamabad on Thursday. The 35-year-old officer reportedly shot himself in the chest near Serena Chowk while on duty and later succumbed to his injuries at PIMS Hospital.

According to police sources, the incident occurred shortly after SP Akbar received a distressing phone call from a senior officer. He had recently visited a psychiatrist for symptoms of depression, but declined hospitalization for treatment.

SP Adeel Akbar, known for his intelligence and professionalism, had been serving under significant work-related stress, colleagues revealed. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through Pakistan’s law enforcement community and reignited conversations about the mental health crisis within the police service.

Akbar leaves behind a four-year-old daughter. Senior officers and government officials have expressed deep sorrow over his death, with many emphasizing the urgent need for institutional mental health support, counseling programs, and workplace reforms to prevent similar tragedies.

Mental health experts have repeatedly warned that long hours, political pressure, and lack of psychological assistance have made police personnel highly vulnerable to stress-related conditions and suicide.
