British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has pledged an additional £10 million to strengthen security for mosques and Muslim communities across the United Kingdom, following a suspected arson attack on Peacehaven Mosque in East Sussex earlier this month.

During his visit to the site on October 4, Starmer condemned the attack as a “cowardly act of hate” and reaffirmed his government’s commitment to protecting all faith communities. Authorities are treating the incident as a hate crime amid a sharp rise in Islamophobic offenses nationwide.

According to official data, Islamophobic incidents have surged by 763% since the outbreak of the 2023 Gaza conflict, prompting widespread concern about the safety of Muslims and their places of worship.

The new funding will supplement the government’s existing £29.4 million security program designed to protect religious institutions, including Jewish synagogues and churches. The additional resources aim to improve surveillance systems, increase police presence, and provide emergency response training for faith leaders and community volunteers.

However, the announcement has also sparked online criticism, with some social media users questioning the government’s uneven response to antisemitic attacks and crimes against churches, calling for a balanced approach to safeguarding all religious groups.

Prime Minister Starmer emphasized that his government “will not tolerate hate in any form” and that protecting faith communities remains a national priority.
