The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a joint meeting of its selection and advisory committees on October 20, 2025, to determine the captain for the ODI team ahead of the upcoming home series against South Africa. The review comes at the request of head coach Mike Hesson, who has sought a leadership evaluation following recent team performances.

Current captain Mohammad Rizwan, celebrated for leading Pakistan to away series victories against Australia and South Africa in 2024, now faces potential replacement. The 2025 season has been challenging, with Pakistan suffering a tri-series loss, an early exit from the Champions Trophy, and securing only one win in nine ODIs.

The PCB is reportedly considering multiple options for the leadership role, including Shaheen Shah Afridi, Salman Ali Agha, and Babar Azam, as it aims to build a strong ODI setup in preparation for the 2027 World Cup. The upcoming decision is expected to have a major impact on Pakistan’s strategy and squad cohesion leading into key international fixtures.
