A lighthearted press briefing turned into a media storm after White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt responded sarcastically to a journalist’s question about the upcoming meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Following reports of a detailed phone call between the two leaders discussing Ukraine’s ceasefire and other global issues, it was announced that the meeting would take place in Budapest, Hungary. During a press conference, a reporter asked, “Who decided on Budapest as the meeting venue?” to which Leavitt quipped, “Your mom did.”
When questioned later if her comment was meant as a joke, Leavitt doubled down, saying, “You’re one of those left-wing activists who pretend to be journalists. I find it funny because no one takes you seriously — not even your colleagues.”
Her remarks sparked widespread backlash on social media and among journalist circles, with many calling the response “unprofessional” and “disrespectful.” The White House has not yet issued an official clarification on the incident.
