The Punjab government has introduced a new weapon in its fight against hazardous air pollution — anti-smog guns — which were successfully tested in Lahore’s Kahna area on October 18, 2025. The trial demonstrated a dramatic 70% reduction in air pollution, bringing the Air Quality Index (AQI) down from 666 to 170 through the use of high-pressure water mist designed to capture and settle airborne particles.
The Punjab Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) verified the trial’s results, while independent monitoring from IQAir recorded an AQI of 154, indicating a significant localized improvement. Despite the success, overall air quality in Lahore remains poor, largely due to ongoing emissions from vehicles, brick kilns, and crop residue burning in surrounding regions.
The anti-smog initiative is part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s broader environmental action plan aimed at mitigating Lahore’s worsening winter smog crisis. Government officials stated that the project will soon expand to other high-pollution zones across the city and major urban centers of Punjab.
Environmental experts have welcomed the move, calling it an important step toward cleaner air, though they stress that sustainable progress will require stricter regulation of industrial emissions and stronger public awareness campaigns.
