Russia has reportedly turned down India’s request to suspend the delivery of RD-93MA fighter jet engines to Pakistan, reaffirming its commitment to existing defense contracts. The engines are being supplied for Pakistan’s JF-17 Block III fighter jets, which are jointly developed with China.
According to diplomatic sources, India had approached Moscow through back-channel discussions earlier this year, expressing concerns that the enhanced RD-93MA engines could strengthen Pakistan’s air combat capabilities. However, Russian officials made it clear that the deliveries were part of legally binding agreements that could not be altered due to third-party objections.
The RD-93MA, an upgraded version of the RD-93 engine, offers improved thrust, fuel efficiency, and operational reliability — making it a critical component in the modernization of Pakistan’s fighter fleet. Defense analysts note that the new engine significantly boosts the JF-17’s performance, enabling it to compete with advanced regional aircraft.
The development underscores rising geopolitical tension in South Asia, as India closely monitors Pakistan’s expanding air capabilities and Russia’s evolving defense diplomacy in the region.
