Taliban Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi arrived in India on Thursday for a six-day official visit, marking the first high-level trip by a Taliban leader since their takeover of Afghanistan in 2021. The visit was made possible through a UN exemption from travel bans.

Upon arrival, India accorded him full diplomatic protocol honors. During his stay, Muttaqi is scheduled to meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar. Their talks are expected to cover a broad spectrum of issues: the revival of pre-2021 development aid and infrastructure projects, enhancement of trade and economic cooperation, and regional security concerns—especially cross-border terrorism.

Observers see the visit as part of a shifting regional paradigm, where India is cautiously engaging with the Taliban government while pursuing its strategic interests in South Asia. Re-opening channels of dialogue and cooperation suggests a potential recalibration in diplomatic relations following years of uncertainty.
