A dramatic incident occurred in the Supreme Court of India on Monday when a lawyer attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice B.R. Gavai during court proceedings, causing chaos and drawing nationwide condemnation.

According to details, the incident took place in Court No. 1 while the bench headed by Chief Justice Gavai was hearing routine cases. Advocate Rakesh Kishore, a 71-year-old lawyer, suddenly removed his shoe and hurled it toward the Chief Justice while shouting slogans related to the protection of Sanatan Dharma.

Security officials immediately intervened and restrained the lawyer before he could repeat the act. The shoe reportedly missed the Chief Justice by a small margin. As he was escorted out of the courtroom, the lawyer continued chanting religious slogans, prompting an immediate suspension of proceedings for a short time.

Following the incident, the Bar Council of India (BCI) took swift action, announcing the suspension of Advocate Kishore from practicing law across all courts and tribunals in the country. The Council also issued a show-cause notice demanding an explanation within 15 days.

Chief Justice Gavai, maintaining composure, directed the court staff to continue with the scheduled hearings, saying, “These things do not affect me.”

The incident is believed to be linked to a recent controversy surrounding remarks made by the Chief Justice during a case related to a damaged Hindu idol, which some groups had criticized as disrespectful.

Legal experts and political observers have condemned the act, calling it an assault on judicial dignity and the sanctity of the court. The Supreme Court Bar Association also expressed deep concern over the incident, urging lawyers to maintain decorum in all judicial proceedings.

The episode has once again highlighted growing intolerance and emotional polarization within India’s judicial and political landscape.
