Violent clashes broke out across Lahore and nearby districts as Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) supporters took to the streets to protest against the Gaza ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The demonstrations, initially peaceful, turned violent when security forces attempted to disperse marchers approaching key city routes.
According to officials, at least five people have been killed and hundreds injured, including both protesters and police officers, in some of the worst unrest the city has seen in recent months. Hospitals have declared emergencies as injured individuals continue to arrive for treatment.
The situation worsened after reports emerged that TLP chief Saad Hussain Rizvi was injured by gunfire during a police operation on the party’s camp in Muridke, a stronghold near Lahore. Following the reports, angry demonstrators set vehicles on fire, blocked major highways, and clashed with riot police using sticks and stones.
Police sources confirmed that the raid was conducted under anti-terrorism laws, citing intelligence about potential threats to public order. However, TLP leaders condemned the operation, accusing authorities of “state brutality” and demanding the immediate release and medical treatment of their injured leader.
In response to the escalating violence, the Punjab government has called for emergency meetings to restore order and prevent the unrest from spreading further. Internet services were partially suspended in affected areas, while security forces have been deployed across Karachi, Islamabad, and Faisalabad amid fears of nationwide demonstrations.
Meanwhile, political analysts say the protests have taken on a broader anti-government tone, with TLP accusing Islamabad of “betraying the Palestinian cause” by staying silent on the Gaza ceasefire.
Authorities have appealed for calm, urging citizens to avoid gatherings and follow official updates. The situation remains tense, with major roads sealed and police checkpoints established throughout Lahore.
