Trump Calls Field Marshal Asim Munir a "Powerful Fighter"

U.S. President Donald Trump praised Pakistan’s leadership and singled out Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir as a “very formidable fighter” during remarks at a luncheon on the sidelines of the AIPAC CEO Summit in South Korea. He described both Pakistan’s prime minister and the army chief as “very good men,” commending their roles amid recent regional tensions.

Speaking to reporters, Trump recounted how a brief but intense escalation between Pakistan and India had seen as many as seven aircraft downed, underscoring the dangers posed by a clash between two nuclear-armed neighbours. He said he used his influence to intervene, calling both Indian and Pakistani leaders and warning of severe trade consequences if the fighting continued.

Trump claimed he told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Pakistani leaders that the United States would withhold trade agreements and impose punitive tariffs — a 250 percent levy, he said — unless hostilities were halted. According to Trump, his intervention prompted phone calls from both capitals within 48 hours, after which the confrontation subsided. “We saved millions of lives,” he asserted, contrasting his approach with what he suggested previous administrations might not have achieved.

The president’s remarks sought to highlight his asserted diplomatic clout in averting a wider conflict, while praising Pakistan’s military leadership for its role during the crisis. The comments add a high-profile U.S. perspective to an already tense regional episode and are likely to draw attention from diplomats and analysts monitoring South Asian security dynamics.
