The World Health Organization (WHO) has formally requested clarification from India regarding the deaths of children allegedly linked to the consumption of a cough syrup. The WHO has inquired whether the syrup involved in these incidents was exported, and if so, to which countries.

The organization has stated that upon confirmation from Indian authorities, it will consider issuing a global medical alert concerning the product.

Reports indicate that in the past month, 17 children under the age of five have died in India after consuming the cough syrup. Investigations revealed that the syrup contained diethylene glycol, a toxic chemical, at levels exceeding the approved limit by 500 times.
