In Campinas, Brazil, the world’s largest mosquito factory has officially opened, aiming to curb the spread of dengue fever across the country.
The factory covers 1,300 square meters and is expected to produce around 190 million mosquitoes per week. It focuses on breeding the Aedes aegypti species, responsible for transmitting the dengue virus.
These mosquitoes are infected with Wolbachia bacteria, which prevents the dengue virus from developing in their bodies. Once these mosquitoes reproduce, the bacteria is passed on to future generations, reducing the chances of dengue transmission.
In the factory, larvae are grown in trays with water under controlled temperatures. Once they mature into adult mosquitoes, they are separated into different containers. Male mosquitoes are fed a sugar solution, while female mosquitoes are provided with blood-filled bags to allow them to lay eggs. After laying eggs, the next generation is produced, continuing the cycle.
This innovative approach is expected to significantly reduce dengue outbreaks in Brazil by using mosquitoes as a natural method to block virus transmission.
