The federal government has begun preparations for the 27th Constitutional Amendment, which aims to bring several major structural changes to Pakistan’s legal and administrative framework.

According to initial reports, the proposed amendment includes changes to Article 243, which would formally recognize and incorporate the rank of Field Marshal for the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) into the Constitution.

The amendment also seeks to address the establishment of constitutional courts, the distribution of executive magistrate powers at the district level, and the implementation of a uniform national curriculum across the country.

Minister of State for Law Barrister Aqeel Malik confirmed that discussions on the 27th Amendment are ongoing, though no formal drafting process has begun yet.

Meanwhile, PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari revealed that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has sought his party’s support for the amendment. He stated that the proposed changes include provisions for constitutional courts, the appointment and transfer of judges, and the introduction of executive magistrates.

Bilawal further noted that the amendment may also alter the provincial share in the NFC Award, and suggested that education and population planning could be returned to federal oversight.

Analysts believe the 27th Amendment could reshape Pakistan’s power structure if passed, potentially sparking debate over the balance between federal and provincial authority.
