Government Proposes Constitutional Amendment to Grant Legal Immunity to Prime Minister

Members of the Senate from the ruling government, Anusha Rahman and Khalil Tahir Sindhu, have introduced a constitutional amendment seeking to extend presidential-style immunity to the Prime Minister under Article 248 of Pakistan’s Constitution.

If approved, the amendment would ensure that no criminal proceedings could be initiated against the Prime Minister during their term in office.

According to sources, the proposed legislation aims to broaden the scope of constitutional immunity currently granted only to the President, extending it to include the Prime Minister as well.

Legal experts note that once Article 248 is amended, the Prime Minister would also be protected from prosecution while holding office, effectively shielding the country’s chief executive from legal action during their tenure.

Senator Anusha Rahman explained that the move was necessary to allow the Prime Minister to perform constitutional and administrative duties without disruption, while Senator Khalil Tahir Sindhu emphasized that the proposal was intended to prevent governance paralysis caused by ongoing legal challenges.

The government maintains that the amendment will ensure continuity and efficiency in decision-making, safeguarding the executive branch from politically motivated cases.

Further debate on the amendment is expected in the Senate, after which it will be referred to the relevant committee for review before being put to a final vote.
